The Unknown and the Known
Two adjacent cemetery markers in the Sipe (pronounced "seep") Springs Cemetery on FM 191 in Comanche County, Texas. These two graves are among many in this large rural cemetery, the only reminder there once was a small town here that became a tent city of 8,000 during a brief area oil boom around 1919. Settled by Confederate veterans and their farmilies, starting in 1870, the area was long a hotbed of Southern sympathy and racial prejudice. There are many graves here marked only by crosses because the original headstones disintegrated. There are also many Confederate veterans buried here, easily identified by Confederate flags placed by a group still living in the past.
