Infrared can produce an artistic interpretation of photographic images, and you don't need a modified camera. Software can do a good job of producing faux infrared. Here's a faux color infrared film-look rendering of view of Lake Tahoe from Sand Harbor State Park near Incline Village, Nevada. Raw devvelopment and processing in Affinity Photo 1.6.7 with additional post processing in DxO Nik Color Efex Pro 4 (Infrared Film).

  • Revitalized Downtown

    Revitalized Downtown

A black and white faux infrared film-look example of a revitalized suburban downtown in an American metropolitan area. This is part of an entertainment district with restaurants, bars and shops in Plano, Texas. It's near the DART transit line, which connects with downtown Dallas, and within walking distance of apartments that appeal to young professionals. This is Texas, and of course people have to use their cars even though it's only a short walk. The shot demonstrates the effectiveness of the fantastic Olympus M.Zuiko 12-40mm f4.0 IS PRO lens, hand-held in a low light situation. The on-board lens stabilazation works with the IS in several Olympus m4/3 cameras for a total of about 6 f-stops of effective use. When I travel, I'm usually on the road with family members, and a tripod is impractical. Thus, the 12-40mm is my number one lens for travel. I use a JB Custom Designs third-party grip on my PEN-F, so balance is never a problem. Raw conversion in Aurora 2018 (to prepare for conversion to black and white). Post processing in Affinity Photo 1.6.7 with Topaz Labs B&W Effects plugin (Infrared III).

  • The Battle Casts

    The Battle Casts

Black and white faux infrared film-look rendering of part of the Blanton’s “Battle Casts” collection. In the late 19th and 20th centuries museums and universities collected hand-made, life-size plaster casts of Greek and Roman bronze or marble sculptures. Most were cast by skilled artisans in Boston and Cologne. The purpose of these replicas was to expose students and visitors to the art of Greece and Rome and to be models for life-drawing classes. Perhaps it was cheaper than hiring live models, too. Between 1894 and 1923 Professor William J. Battle purchased about 100 copies of these plaster castings for the University of Texas. During the 1930s and 1940s, use of replicas fell out of favor, and the university’s collection was dispersed around the campus, resulting in a drop in number to about 70. In the 1970s a university committee declared the casts of Greek and Roman sculpture were important and should be restored.
The Blanton Museum became home for the collection, which has been displayed in various ways. At the time this image was taken, the pieces available for public view are tucked away in a small space adjacent to the museum’s first-floor offices. Raw development and processing in Alien Skin Exposure X3 (B&W Infrared: Fog - Bright)..
