Wise County Courthouse in B&W
Black and white film-look rendering. The Wise County Courthouse is another of 12 still-existing Texas courthouses designed by architect James Riely (pronounced “Riley) Gordon, who worked from San Antonio, then Dallas, and finally New York. This building was finished in 1896. The exterior was constructed of pink granite from Burnet County, Texas. The interior used Vermont marble. Like most of Gordon’s designs, this one was bold on a grand scale and expensive by the standards of the day. The county issued bonds of $110,000, and Gordon got 5% of the construction costs. Cotton prices were good and cotton crops were plentiful during this period, but the building was still controversial among the taxpayer voters. As happened in the case of some other Gordon courthouse projects, the voters defeated the county commissioners supporting the new courthouse in the next election. But for more than a century this building has served as the seat of county government and justice and has been a major tourist attraction for the city of Decatur. Stained Glass Up Close
Close-up view of the stained-glass features in the dome of the McLennon County Courthouse in Waco, Texas. This historic courthouse was one of 26 designs of Texas courthouses by James Riely (pronounced "Riley") Gordon, 8 of which were never built. A tornado ripped through Waco in 1952, damaging some of the stained glass. The son of the original craftsman who created the windows was hired to restore the stained glass. Tiki Handles
These carved tiki mask handles are used on the entrance to a courtroom in the McLennon County Courthouse in Waco, Texas. The building, designed by renown public-building architect James Riely Gordon, has distinctive features like these both inside and outside. According to a county official, the supplier sent tiki handles instead of brass, and the builders decided to keep them, and the handles are still beautiful more than a century later. Here's a shot of the marking symbol used, shot with an Olympus PEN-F and an adapted OM-System 50mm f2.0 Macro manual-focus lens. Nurses Walk
Sign recognizing the work of the convict nurses who served the first two hospitals here in this British colony in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
