Hanging On
A few seed balls remain on the branches of this American Sycamore tree as signs of new buds appear, marking the beginning of a new season. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Austin, Texas. Part of a fun experiment with an adapted lens, the Olympus OM-System Zuiko 50mm f1.8 Auto-S, on my MFT Pen-F. This lens was one of the top-of-the-line “normal” lenses for the old Olympus 35mm camera system. It was small, sharp and fast. In a nutshell, good glass. I got my copy for about $25. In micro four thirds, the lens is the equivalent of 100mm, and on the m4/3 camera can work as close as 15 inches. The lens is manual focus, and there’s no electrical connection to the MFT camera, but on the PEN-F, a preset can be made to register the lens name and focal length in each image. Despite a few optical flaws, this 50mm f1.8 produces pleasing images with smooth bokeh. It’s great for portraits and other close-ups. A Hint of Spring
Beneath a coating of dandelion seeds, it's apparent buds are beginning to appear on this Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora) in Central Texas, suggesting spring could be early this year.
